The international Sacra Liturgia conference is coming to San Francisco in 2022, and Bishop Steven J. Lopes of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter will be among a number of internationally renowned liturgical scholars presenting at the event.
According to the news release from the Archdiocese of San Francisco, “The Sacra Liturgia international conferences on the Sacred Liturgy have been promoting the Council’s vision of zeal for the promotion and restoration of the liturgy for the past eight years. We are honoured and delighted to welcome Sacra Liturgia here to San Francisco for its fifth such international conference, to be held from June 28 – July 1, 2022 at St. Mary’s Cathedral.” Cardinal Robert Sarah, former prefect for the Congregation of Divine Worship, is the keynote presenter for the 2022 conference.
The news release states Sacra Liturgia will feature “a number of other internationally renowned liturgical scholars, including Bishop Steven Lopes, Father Joseph Fessio, SJ, Father Michael Lang, Dom Alcuin Reid, Professor Jennifer Donelson-Nowicka and Professor Duncan Stroik. The speakers will address a variety of liturgical questions pertinent to the life of the Church in our day.”
The Sacra Liturgia conference will feature every day “exemplary solemn liturgical celebrations of Mass or Vespers, concluding with a Pontifical Mass of St. Júnipero Serra on his feast day, July 1st.” The final Mass will feature settings composed by Frank LaRocca, who is a composer in residence at the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music and Divine Worship.
Bishop Lopes is the first bishop of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, one of three Roman Catholic dioceses with Anglican traditions established by the pope under the 2009 apostolic constitution Anglicanorum coetibus. The other two Ordinariates are based principally in the United Kingdom (Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham), and Australia (Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross).
Bishop Lopes, who originally hails from San Francisco and was ordained a Catholic priest for the San Francisco archdiocese prior to working in the Vatican, was made bishop for the North American Ordinariate by Pope Francis in February 2016. As bishop, he has stressed in the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter the themes of discipleship of Jesus Christ, realizing Vatican II’s vision of ecumenism, and lively love for the Holy Eucharist.
Prior to his ordination as bishop for the Ordinariate, Bishop Lopes had served as an official in the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and was the coordinating secretary for the Anglicanae Traditiones Interdicasteral Commission that developed the Roman Rite liturgical books for the Ordinariates, which reflect the Ordinariates’ Anglican patrimony and were all authorized by Pope Francis.
According to Sacra Liturgia, the organization plans to announce further details of speakers and their topics in October 2021. A list of registration prices, facilities, and affordable accommodations will be available in January 2022, with the full program to be published after Easter 2022.
“Sacra Liturgia is profoundly grateful to Archbishop Cordileone for his invitation to come to San Francisco and for the opportunity to reconvene there,” the organization stated. “We look forward, in line with our previous conferences, to an informative event that will form its participants in the spirit and power of the Sacred Liturgy and its authentic renewal in the Church of the twenty-first century.”
