Bishop Steven Lopes is celebrating a Pontifical Ordinariate Mass in Philadelphia in honor of St. John Henry Newman on Oct. 7, with Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson J. Perez preaching, that will broadcast live over Facebook.
According to James Thomas More Griffin, executive director of the Durandus Institute for Sacred Music and Liturgy, the Pontifical Mass celebrated with the Ordinariate’s Divine Worship missal will be livestreamed at 7 PM EDT / 6 PM CDT on the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Facebook page.
The Mass celebrates St John Henry Newman (1801-1890), whose journey of faith from Anglican ministry into the Catholic Church, helped prefigure and lay the groundwork for eventually realizing ecumenical unity between communities of the Anglican tradition and the Catholic Church via the creation of the Personal Ordinariates for the Anglican tradition under then-Pope Benedict XVI.
“This occasion is a collaboration of the Ordinariate and the Durandus Institute for Sacred Liturgy & Music,” Griffin said in an Oct. 7 email. “Visiting music director Kevin Clarke will lead the parish choir of St John the Baptist Ordinariate Church, and associates of Durandus, in singing William Byrd's Mass for Five Voices, while the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Choir will sing the Proper chants.”
The Ordinariates’ Divine Worship – The Missal, which was fully authorized by Pope Francis, incorporates the beautiful Anglican tradition of worship and ceremonial familiar to Newman and the Oxford Movement, into the full life and communion of the Catholic Church.
The Durandus Institute is an apostolate for evangelizing through the beauty of the sacred liturgy in its many forms. This year, prior to the Philadelphia Mass, it put together a beautiful Ordinariate Solemn Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer parish in New York City for the feast of Our Lady of Walsingham (Sept 24), and put together an Ordinariate Solemn Choral Evensong for the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Agatha-St. James Catholic Church, Philadelphia, home to the first Newman Center in the U.S.
